When it comes to sitting still I can’t. It is not just the ordinary anxiety but the manic kind where the sound of silence leaves me climbing the walls. So when the rest of the clan has thrown in the towel and gone to bed,and I am still up I tend to putter around “trying” to be quiet.
This “quiet time” was spent in the garage measuring the layout lines according to the James Whelan’s plane making book. I have so far laid out the lines and begun cutting I do feel that this particular plane won’t work, I think I cut the abutment walls to narrow and there won’t be anything for the wedge to hold to but we shall see! after all, this is ONLY a test. If it were real then it would have been made of ???? something expensive. And I would have to censor my post today.
As I have been pondering, I think that my bench will grace a 38″ tall frame, with a top in the 2.5″-3.0″ this will all depend on the tools and materials I have, and I haven’t been able to decide on the depth but 24″-27″ seems to be the recommended and since I am an Anarchist I am leaning more to 27″ plus at 38″ tall, I think that 27″ makes a better base to height ratio than a 24″. A pair of holdfasts a leg vise, a sliding deadman, a planing stop should be all I need for work holding.
Driving around in the North Austin area today watching ACRES!!!! of Live Oak, Cedar, and Mesquite being BULL DOZED and sent through mulching machines. Just makes me cry, all the beautiful furniture, workbenches, hand planes, and all the other woody things that come out of trees that are beautiful, AND useful and not to mention ECO-friendly, really WHO knew that TREES were eco-friendly? There EVERY where, RIGHT?. More cookie cutter homes made to last half as long as your 30 yr mortgage costing as advertised FROM $500 to $1.5 ?!?!?!? really! 1.5 MILLION ( I just don’t get it). But THAT rant is for another day ( I’ll save it).
PS. As I have been bouncing back and forth from the garage working today’s post and taking pictures of my progress I have finished cutting through and getting the bed level and flat except my saw drifted and i have a up turn in the bed line creating a concave curve across the middle but since I have also cut a recess for the capscrew so much of that curve is gone !TOUCHE! keep the Distal Phalanges axially rotated! lets put an end to today’s anxiety roller coaster and post this and the pictures. I do need to “gently” adjust the wear and forward slope of the throat there are some gross misalignment on that side and should be fine to finish once I glue the clamps on !
L8r fellow wood chucks!
remember keep the pointy end sharp and your blood inside!
Nice work. One day I’ll try make my own
