Hello great Big, small World. And greetings from the garage. My name is Marc and I have reached the age of woodworking (which means I am over 40!) and have decided to stop being a “wood watcher” and become a “woodworker”. Truth be told I have been an uncommitted woodworker for the better part of the 30 years. Yes, I was bitten by that termite in my teens reading “Fine WoodWorking” and “Popular Woodworking” and ANY magazine that had any kind of “artistic lumber construction” on the cover at the magazine rack. I guess looking back I spent my time reading both Wood and Guitar magazines and as a “life-long student” of the classical guitar it is natural to want to take a “TREE” and process it into a fine musical instrument or some fine piece of art.
So in honor of my “Woody” heroes: Masters; Roy Underhill, “Na’rM Abrahams, Paul Sellers, Marc (who spells his name the RIGHT way) Spagnuolo, John Heinz, and of course the estimable King of the WordPress blog-o-sphere towering in at 6 foot 3 (which isnt that tall, BTW) and as skinny as the Illinois RailSplitter weighing in at a buck fid-E covered in 2 coats of boiled linseed oil ( I wonder if there is a relation there?? after all Stumpy Nubs has a reproduction of Honest Abe’s death mask……..)? any who. Chris Schwarz, of whom I will emulate and build the Schwarzian-Holtzappfel bench. Why this one? the Roubo-Holtzy he made was good but upon realizing he had created the Holtzy-Schwarz bench I knew that would be the one for me.
You might be asking ” where are the pictures”? I will when I figure out how to take photos on my camera that don’t look bad AND figure how to go from a galaxy S5 to Windoze Xp to here then…..
Tools- Are the measure of a man’s skill right? Nope just a measure of the depth of his pocket book. So how many and what kind do I have?
- Walmart edition Black and Decker drill 3 amp I think.
- Walmart edition B & D jig saw. (the base and the blade are NOT at 90 degrees)
- Walmart edition SKILL circ saw. ( Another fine example of crap over quailty)
- Buck Bros. chisels 1/4″ thru 1″ (I have already chipped the blade on 2 of these babies)
- a Lord Stanley “Handyman” #4 plane (again the frog and the base are out of square)
- 22″ miter saw from Craftsmans w/o the miter box
- 2- 26″ crosscut saws with no name both missing screws in the handle and bad orthodontics
All these tools have been pain-stakingly acquired over time from needful purchase to estate sale gifts so my budget is Zip, Zilch, Zero, Nada.
So what I am saying is I am BA-roque and have no MO-net. Of course I will need to decide on a my production style. Power, hand tools, or hybrid. How about I build what I can with what I have and go from there. DEAL?
Well enough about me, I hope that you will join me as I learn from watching YouTube, and clicker the enter-web for archived information and glean from it the knowledge being lost to Ikea and WallyMart.
